Jamal, Owner of Vagabonds Barbers based in Baddeley Green in Stoke-on-Trent is in the spotlight in our new series Meet The Local Business featuring the person behind some of your favourite locally owned business.
Tell us about you and your business.
Vagabonds has been going for three years and we came up with the name with my wife and my Father-in-Law. We're a contemporary barber shop based in Baddeley Green in Stoke-on-Trent.
What made you want to start your business?
I've been a barber for over 10 years, I've worked all over Stoke and Staffordshire and surrounding areas and I wanted to do things a bit different and put my own twist on things.
How would you describe the business?
I'd describe it as a traditional and a contemporary barber shop we do like to mix things up a bit.
What's your most popular item?
Without a shadow of a doubt it's the skin fade, they've been in for about three years and they're different for each hair type. Whether you've got thick or thin hair we can do it all we don't struggle with any of it.
Where do you see your business in the next year or two years?
We're bringing out some new product ranges, salt spray, texture spray, aftershave, matt hairspray and beard oils. I'm also looking to expand the business and take on a new larger premises and hopefully some more staff too.
How did COVID affect your business?
We closed down and things were a complete nightmare. We quickly made the decision to go to appointments only and its been the best thing we ever did. There's nobody waiting its a nice controlled environment. We coped by doing a lot of stuff online, we did a lot of behind the scene stuff.
What's the best thing about being a local business owner?
Being able to put your own twist on things, being able to use our own creativity and doing our own thing which will help us to stand out as a brand and a s a barber shop
Do you find you have other local businesses that visit your barber shop?
Yes we do, there's lots of local businesses in Baddeley Green we connect with and its not just local there's businesses farther a field and we like to help each other out which is great for our local community.
